John Rylands was a successful textile merchant and philanthropist born in Lancashire on 7th February 1801. Manchester's first multi-millionaire and the proprietor of the largest textile manufacturing company in the UK. He was instrumental in the development of the Manchester Ship Canal. Investing several times to see its completion. Known for his numerous, discreet charitable acts. He founded and supported orphanages, homes for elderly women, a rest home for financially struggling ministers, and provided a town hall, public baths, library, and coffeehouse in Stretford, where he lived. The John Rylands Library in Manchester was built as a lasting tribute to Rylands by his wife. One of the city's most important cultural institutions, known for its extensive collections of rare books, manuscripts, and other cultural artifacts. Today, the library continues to be a valuable resource in Manchester and serves as a testament to Rylands' dedication to education and community.
