The author who outsold Charles Dickens is as unknown today as he was famous in his own time. William Harrison Ainsworth born in Manchester on 4 February 1805. He was one of the most popular and widely read novelists of the 19th century. Best known for his romantic novels with vivid and colourful depictions of historical events and characters.

Two of his stories I know we’ll be looking into here at Wicked Acorn will be his novel Lancashire Witches and company about the Pendle Witch trial and another simply called Guy Fawkes. Maybe we’ll find out if he really did stay at Ordsall hall and whether he drowned his sorrows at the Unicorn pub in Altrincham.

William Harrison Ainsworth died on January 3, 1882, at the age of 76. He is remembered as one of the greatest historical novelists of the 19th century.
